Product Description
From the New York Times-bestselling author of In Harm's Way comes a true-life story of American soldiers overcoming great odds to achieve a stunning military victory.

Horse Soldiers is the dramatic account of a small band of Special Forces soldiers who secretly entered Afghanistan following 9/11 and rode to war on horses against the Taliban. Outnumbered forty to one, they pursued the enemy across mountainous terrain and, after a series of intense battles, captured the city of Mazar-i-Sharif, which was strategically essential if they were to defeat the Taliban.

The bone-weary American soldiers were welcomed as liberators, and overjoyed Afghans thronged the streets. Then the action took a wholly unexpected turn. During a surrender of six hundred Taliban troops, the Horse Soldiers were ambushed. Dangerously outnumbered, they fought for their lives in the city's immense fortress, Qala-i-Janghi, or the House of War. At risk were the military gains of the entire campaign: if the soldiers perished or were captured, the effort to defeat the Taliban might be doomed.

As the Americans struggled to hold the fortress, they faced some of the most intense urban warfare of our time. But until now the full story of the Horse Soldiers has never been told. Doug Stanton received unprecedented cooperation from the U.S. Army's Special Forces soldiers and Special Operations helicopter pilots, as well as access to voluminous after-battle reports. In addition, he interviewed more than one hundred participants and walked every inch of the climactic battleground.

This exciting story is filled with unforgettable characters: brave Special Forces soldiers, tough CIA operatives, cunning Afghan warlords, anxious stateside soldiers' wives who do not know where their husbands have gone, and humble Afghan boys spying on the Taliban.

Deeply researched and beautifully written, Stanton's account of America's quest to liberate an oppressed people touches the mythic. The Horse Soldiers combined ancient strategies of cavalry warfare with twenty-first-century aerial bombardment technology to perform a seemingly impossible feat. Moreover, their careful effort to win the hearts of local townspeople and avoid civilian casualties proved a valuable lesson for America's ongoing efforts in Afghanistan.

Horse Soldiers is a big-hearted and thrilling read, with an epic story that reaches not just across the cold mountains of Afghanistan but into the homes of small-town America, and confirms Doug Stanton as one of our country's preeminent storytellers.

4 out of 5 stars A well-written adventure story   September 3, 2010
Karl
At its heart, this is an adventure story, and a good one at that. The book chronicles the CIA and Special Forces teams that worked with the Northern Alliance to bring down the Taliban. Provides interesting detail on operations of the teams and how they integrated with the warlords of the Northern Alliance to break the Taliban's control of the country. Interwoven into the book is the story of John Lind (the American Taliban). Lind was one of a handful of 600 Taliban prisoners to survive the incredible battle that took place at the Qala-i-Janghi fortress. The sub-plot of the prisoners' uprising and the quelling of that uprising made for fascinating reading.

In addition to this being a page turner of a book, one also picks up tidbits about life in Afghanistan. Especially interesting were the insights into how the warlords worked to defeat the Taliban. Although the warlords won't be winning any Nobel Peace Prizes anytime soon, there are probably some pretty good lessons to be learned from them about how to go about defeating the enemy. So, besides being a good adventure story, the book contains some useful information for those interested in Afghanistan.

1 out of 5 stars Important story, however poorly written   August 24, 2010
Harry M. Shin (Livermore, CA USA)
1. It's astounding and sad to read such poorly written books by apparent "journalists", especially when the story deserves so much better.
2. With the above being said, if one has the patience to sift through a poorly written book, then it's still worthwhile to read / learn about this important part of our recent military history.

5 out of 5 stars I liked it   August 13, 2010

This is a great book. It really makes you think about what really goes on how our soldiers sacrifice for our country.

5 out of 5 stars Extraordianry tale of courage.   August 8, 2010

The author succeeded in developing an easy to follow story line. This story is more than the cliche "band of brothers." It is a story that stirred several emotions in me, such as anger, sadness, anxious and humorous, sometimes in the same paragraph. At times, not often, the story rambled, but this was far and few moments. I recommend this book to anybody interested in the military events taken after 9/11.

5 out of 5 stars Definite Keeper!   July 21, 2010

This was an excellent read that helps you appreciate the jobs our military men and women perform on a daily basis. It is well written, though a little heavy on military jargon. A book men and women both can appreciate.
